2011 Summer Camps

Time is running out! 

With sessions starting to fill, now is the time to register for Earth Treks’ summer climbing camps! Visit the specific camp pages below for details and registration. With four great day camps to choose from, your child is sure to have a summer they won’ t soon forget!

Ages 9-13

This 5-day camp is Earth Treks’ most popular camp and our only camp to include outdoor rock climbing!  Participants meet daily at Earth Treks Climbing Center in Columbia, Timonium, or Rockville. The first day is spent inside with team-building challenges, learning belay skills and rock climbing safety. The next three days are spent at local outdoor climbing sites such as Carderock, Great Falls, and Rocks State Park. The final day will be back in the gym for a Climbers’ Olympics and a pizza lunch.

Being our most popular camp, this camp generally fills quickly. Sessions start June 20th.

Ages 10-14 (Basic swimming skills are mandatory)

This 5-day camp exposes kids to two of the coolest sports around! Campers spend three days indoor rock climbing and two days kayaking on the beautiful Gunpowder River. Rock climbing activities will be run by Earth Treks’ experienced camp staff, while the river portion will be guided by Ultimate Watersports’ certified kayaking instructors. This will prove to be one of the best camps of your kids’ summer. Just think of the stories they’ll have to tell when they return to school!

With only two weeks available (Aug. 1-5 and Aug. 8-12), make sure to reserve your space early.

Ages 10-14 (Basic biking skills are mandatory)

Earth Treks has teamed up with Terrapin Adventures to bring you a day camp brimming with non stop action. Two indoor climbing days are spent at Earth Treks Columbia. Three adventure days are spent at Terrapin Adventures, a state-of-the-art high ropes adventure center at historic Savage Mill. Campers will glide through the forest on a 330′ Zip Line, experience 2 G’s of force on the Giant Swing and test their mettle 40′ up on the High Ropes Challenge Course.

With only two weeks available (July 18-22 and July 25-29), make sure to reserve your space early.

Ages 6-9

A 3-day indoor climbing camp for young climbers that runs from 9am-12pm. Kids will be introduced to age appropriate safety skills and of course climb, climb, climb. Activities improve self esteem, social skills, and kinesthetic development. The goal of this course is to provide a foundation on which to build a lifetime of climbing that focuses on fun, teamwork, and safety.

Sessions start June 21st.

Milking a key rest often makes the difference between the send and another hang on the rope. In this clinic we’ll talk about how to find places to shake out and recover in different types of terrain around the gym, as well as how to best pace the moves between rests.

Following Sport Routes and Retrieving Your Gear

A tutorial in preparation for climbing outside. Learn to recognize common outdoor anchor setups and the best methods for safely removing your gear and getting yourself back to the ground in one piece. We’ll also demonstrate some of the dangerous mistakes that you should avoid at all costs!

This clinic will help make small improvements in footwork that can help with large improvements in ones ability to progress in technical difficulty. Better footwork will improve overall climbing endurance, using ones forearms less and flowing smoothly and quickly up the rock or wall.

Just a friendly reminder that there will be a few minor changes to our regular hours during the holiday season:

Friday, December 24th: Christmas Eve, all three gyms will be open 9am-4pm.

Saturday, December 25th: Christmas Day, all three gyms will be closed.

December 27-30th: Extra Open Climb hours from 12-4pm.

Friday, December 31st: New Years Eve, all three gyms will be open 9am-4pm.

Saturday, January 1st: New Years Day, all three gyms will be closed.


Additionally, each location will have extra Open Climb hours offered during the holiday season.

2011 Ice Climbing News

Brrrr….it’s getting chilly out there. You know what that means? Ice season is almost here!

ice_1If you’re looking for a new challenge, add ice climbing to your winter season wish list. Take a swing at synthetic ice on the walls of the gym or join Earth Treks for three spectacular days of ice climbing in the Adirondacks of New York!

New to the world of ice? Mark your calendars for the upcoming Ice Nite! Come meet Earth Treks’ Ice Climbing Guides, swing your axes at synthetic ice and climb the walls in mountain boots. Participants will have the chance to place ice screws and learn to build V-threads in a 300 pound block of ice. Ice Nite is a totally FREE event and a ton of fun! Register Online.

The “Dacks” boasts exceptional single and multi-pitch climbing, stunning scenery, and reliable ice climbing conditions. Worried about clothing options and how to stay dry during your ice adventures? Join Gary on December 16th in Timonium for a discussion on outdoor clothing and how to stay warm and dry in a cold & wet environment. The clinic is FREE and is being held from 7:00-8:30pm in the Timonium gym. He will discuss clothing options that are not much different than what you may already have as a skier or snowboarder!
