This is all thanks to the Avi Sengupta Climbing Scholarship—created by Earth Treks to honor the life and memory of beloved ET employee, Avishek “Avi” Sengupta. We want to share with you a little about what made Avi such a special person and how he inspired the new scholarship program.
Avi Sengupta was an incredible human being and truly represented the best of us as a company and community. He was one of the most passionate individuals we met. Even if you only met Avi once, you would never forget his smile, and passion for life, climbing, and adventure. Avi started working for Earth Treks as a young man and continued his dedicated service while in school and long after launching a successful career. Avi was an unparalleled listener, possessed wisdom beyond his years, partnered easily, and made everyone he interacted with feel valued. From a young age, Avi understood the incredible impact that climbing can have on people, and unselfishly went about sharing his passion for climbing (and passion for life) with anyone and everyone. As a climbing instructor, as a friend, or just someone you bumped into in the cave, Avi provided life changing experiences for countless individuals. Avi pursued his goals in climbing, fitness, and life every day until we lost him while he was participating in a Tough Mudder event on April 20, 2013.
In Avi’s memory and in his honor, Earth Treks is proud to introduce the Avi Sengupta Climbing Scholarship to Earth Treks Employees. This scholarship is a grant made annually by Earth Treks to support the climbing dreams of ET employees.
In its inaugural year we received numerous applications and narrowed it down to five awards—the first being the setter’s trip in Hueco!
Follow the ET setters crushing classic Hueco boulders, as well as the other four scholarship recipients throughout 2016. We will be posting updates on Instagram and in a Photo Album on Facebook.

January 2016 – Member Clinics
Starting September 2015, Earth Treks Rockville will no longer take advanced registrations. Members will be able to sign up for the Members Clinics the day of the class. Thank you for your patience as we transition into this new process.
Fitness Classes are FREE to Earth Treks’ members and $5 in addition to entrance fee for non-members. Included in the fitness classes are a variety of drop-in 30 minute classes designed to deliver a challenging functional fitness workout. Class size is limited.
- The Burn: A 30 minute, high intensity, full body, functional fitness workout.
- Core Burn: Cap your climbing session with a 30 minute core strengthening class.
- Climber Cross Train: An intense 30 minute antagonistic climbing workout. Maintain balance in your workouts by hitting the muscle groups that get missed when climbing. Columbia & Timonium Only

Well, you didn’t have to wait for the exact location as long as we thought—it’s time to officially unveil that Earth Treks is coming to Crystal City, VA! The new gym will be located at 1235 S. Clark St. and will take full advantage of the unique space afforded by an existing racquet club. Dust will be flying around the New Year when Earth Treks plans to start demolishing the existing facility in preparation for climbing wall construction. High ceilinged tennis and racquetball courts will make way for a jaw dropping 35,000 sq ft climbing wall. Get stoked and check out all the bouldering and roped terrain in our Climbing Wall Virtual Tour, brought to you by the wall’s designer, Jason Kehl.
With metro access, Bikeshare, and ample parking, Earth Treks Crystal City is convenient to Washington, D.C. and Northern Virginia. The new location is just a five minute walk from the Crystal City Metro stop off the Blue and Yellow lines, and served by numerous biking trails. On site garaged parking will serve the gym and be free during peak hours. Surrounded by scores of shops and restaurants, Earth Treks will feel right at home in Crystal City’s burgeoning creative community!
