2011 Ice Climbing News

Brrrr….it’s getting chilly out there. You know what that means? Ice season is almost here!

ice_1If you’re looking for a new challenge, add ice climbing to your winter season wish list. Take a swing at synthetic ice on the walls of the gym or join Earth Treks for three spectacular days of ice climbing in the Adirondacks of New York!

New to the world of ice? Mark your calendars for the upcoming Ice Nite! Come meet Earth Treks’ Ice Climbing Guides, swing your axes at synthetic ice and climb the walls in mountain boots. Participants will have the chance to place ice screws and learn to build V-threads in a 300 pound block of ice. Ice Nite is a totally FREE event and a ton of fun! Register Online.

The “Dacks” boasts exceptional single and multi-pitch climbing, stunning scenery, and reliable ice climbing conditions. Worried about clothing options and how to stay dry during your ice adventures? Join Gary on December 16th in Timonium for a discussion on outdoor clothing and how to stay warm and dry in a cold & wet environment. The clinic is FREE and is being held from 7:00-8:30pm in the Timonium gym. He will discuss clothing options that are not much different than what you may already have as a skier or snowboarder!

Olympic Rings Training

Strength training using Olympic rings through multiple body positions, push, pull, and core. It’s an excellent way to build stabilizer muscles and balance because of the rings’ natural multi directional movement. Workouts ranging from beginner to advanced. With guest instructor Ben Prescott, a member of the University of Maryland Gymkana program.

Power is the ability to recruit total muscular strength in a controlled burst — an important tool for climbing at maximum difficulty. During this clinic we’ll discuss the physiology of muscle recruitment and learn how to effectively train for power through bouldering and feet-off campus training.

It’s true that the arm bone is connected to the shoulder bone, but how is the shoulder bone connected to the hip bone?  Through the core!  We’ll discuss how core strength requirements for rock climbers differ from those of other athletes, and learn exercises that will improve your ability to move through steep rock.

2010 Youth Pan American Championship

Congratulations to all of our employees, team members & gym members who competed in Ecuador this weekend at the Youth Pan American Championships!

Final standings from Ecuador: ET employees: Griffin Whiteside; 3rd in bouldering, Miura Hawkins; 4th in sport. Team members Nicole Hansen; 6th in sport, Kerry Scott; 4th in bouldering, Kayla Lieuw; 5th in speed & 2nd in bouldering. Last but not least, ET member Sasha Diguilian placed 1st in sport!

We will have photos and a recap from Coach Mike later this week. A fantastic showing by everyone! Congratulations!!
